Street Lighting Project, Eldoret

Major western Kenyan town Eldoret has adopted solar energy as an affordable and sustainable way to meet its street lighting demands. A large-scale solar street lighting project was started in 2023 in a few of the town’s areas.

In Eldoret, the solar street lights were placed in strategic locations throughout the city’s essential thoroughfares, residential neighborhoods, and open spaces. The street light poles had to be carefully positioned during the installation process to guarantee that the panels would receive the best possible solar exposure and that the surrounding regions would have enough lighting.

Many solar-powered street lights were installed as part of the project in order to give dependable and economical nighttime lighting for cars and pedestrians. Every street light unit was made up of a few essential parts:

Solar Panels: On top of the street light poles, high-efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) panels were installed. During the day, these panels used solar radiation to create electrical energy that was then stored in rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable Batteries: Usually a lithium-ion or lead-acid battery, each street light unit had a high-capacity rechargeable battery. The energy produced by the solar panels during the day was stored in these batteries, guaranteeing a steady supply of electricity for the street lights at night.

Furthermore, Eldoret’s street lighting demands might be more affordably and ecologically addressed with the help of solar street lights, whose long lifespan and low maintenance requirements improve public safety and the general standard of living for both locals and visitors.
